The carbon footprint (CF) method refers to the total amount of greenhouse gases that can be attributed to individual activities, industrial activities, products or even an entire economic sector (https://ec.europa.eu / knowledge4policy / glossary / carbon-footprint_en). Also, greenhouse gas emissions are not only attributed to anthropogenic activities but also to natural phenomena.

Greenhouse gas emissions can be divided into two categories (EIB Project Carbon Footprint Methodologies – Methodologies for the Assessment of Project GHG Emissions and Emission Variations, 2018):

1.Direct greenhouse gas emissions e.g. burning fossil fuels, industrial activities

2. Indirect greenhouse gas emissions e.g. electricity consumption, heat
